Bionic Franken-dog!!
Riley doesn't even need to dress up today for Halloween! With all those staples in her leg, she can officially be "Bionic Franken-dog" for Halloween. Hehe! Is that bad? Yes, that's bad...
Riley's "official" Halloween portrait from her pictures with Miss Amy back in June!
Franken-dog gets her staples out tomorrow! Hooray! We've almost made it 2 weeks! Tomorrow will be two weeks after surgery. Wow. That time actually did seem to go by pretty fast, thank heavens!
I called Franken-dog's surgeon's office today to ask a few questions. First was how long she should be taking Tramadol and how long she should be having heat on her leg. We're good to stop both. Yay! Then the next question was about how to do her physical therapy exercises and I just have to flex and extend her leg for 10 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day to prevent muscle atrophy. Luckily, she had big muscles to start with!
Can I just say how nice the people are at Dr. Dassler's office? The receptionist answered my 2 calls today and was able to get answers to all of my questions and was just very pleasant in general.
Anywho...Riley has her 8 week follow-up appointment scheduled for December 14th at 9:00 AM. She'll get X-rays taken again (cha-ching! $$$) and may have to be sedated for them (even more $$$). I'm going to see if I can get a digital copy of the X-rays to post on here! I want to see "Bionica's" leg! :)

A Big Mess Cleaned Up!
A few months ago, Purina Pet Gear sent us some samples of their products to test out. They sent some training pee pads and their stain and odor eliminator. I thought we would have plenty of opportunities with "Old Pee Pot Chloe" living here but then she started taking something for urinary incontinence and stopped having accidents in the house and in her sleep.
Then came the great poop incident of October 28, 2011! Let me just clear it up though--the dogs did not poop in the house--I stepped in poop with BOTH shoes while I took Riley outside to use the bathroom. Greeeeat. Of course, like any person who steps in poop outside, I didn't realize it and promptly tracked it inside. Double greeeeat. Enter the Purina Pet Gear Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator for carpet and upholstery that did an AWESOME job cleaning up our carpet and rug!
You can buy the Purina Pet Gear products at local Wal-Marts and K-Marts or on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, or Bed Bath and Beyond's website.
Riley is doing well. We are on day 10 of crate rest and the time has really flown by so far, hooray! She is "talking" in her crate right now, wanting out...I'll try to get a video of that soon.

Not only did it do the job of cleaning the poop off of the carpet, it smelled really nice! I'm glad we have this bottle (hopefully there will be no more poop incidents though) to use in the future! I would recommend this product! Here's some info about it:
"The 2-in-1 cleaning action lifts pet soils from carpet fibers for easy removal while the odor-eliminating technology destroys surface odors on contact. The enzymes and bacteria continue to break down deep soils as well as the source of odors until they've been completely eliminated; thorough odor removal discourages pets from remarking. Designed for use on carpet, upholstery, pet beds, litter boxes and any water-safe surface, the Purina Pet Gear Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator is safe for use around children and pets."

Progress and a New Friend!
Well, we are 8 days post-surgery and the native is getting restless. She is obviously feeling a whole lot better because she's taken to sporadic bursts of barking and scratching on the crate door. We have been doing the heat regimen of 15 minutes of a hot compress on her leg two or three times a day. 6 more days until her staples come out!
We got a nice surprise in the mail today--the toy Riley won over at Miss Barbara's blog that the OP Pack passed along to her came...that was SUPER fast! They must have known Riley is getting cabin fever! It's the cutest monkey toy you ever did see and she LOVES it! She's trying to rip it apart at the moment and is having tons of fun with it.
Hot compress and time out of the crate!
No, friends, she's not yawning...that's her barking! See my pillow next to her crate?

It even says "I Love You" on it, how sweet!
Plus they included some treat samples in the package and both dogs enjoyed those!
Playing with her new toy!
Riley's incision still looks great and I can't believe that she hardly ever tries to lick it. I have to tell her to "leave it" maybe once or twice a day, but other than that, she leaves it alone. She had diarrhea a couple of days ago but that seems to have cleared up now. I think it was because she was drinking some rain water outside a few days ago and maybe that was doing it...who knows.

Six Days Post-Op and Looking Good
Riley's leg looks remarkably well. She must be feeling a lot better today because she's been a bit more whiny in her crate today than she has the last few days. Also, when Grandma took her out earlier today, she reared up on her hind legs...oh my gosh...she's going to give me a heart attack before she's allowed to go back to normal activity!!
She's slept through the last 2 nights (thank Heavens!!). I could use the sleep!

Wanting a belly rub!
Her incision looks so good! At the lower right corner of this pic you can see a purple bruise on the inside of her thigh.
I went by the vet today and picked up some more Tramadol for Riley (her pain pills). She takes 1.5 pills 3 times a day and would run out tomorrow I think. Anyway, she's acting like she doesn't even need them, but probably only because she's been kept on a regular schedule with them and feels good because of that.

Four Days Post-Op
Well, here we are, four days after surgery. Riley is doing very well. She is putting weight on her leg and has a surprisingly good attitude about being penned up in her crate. She is so much happier in her new, larger crate!
Even in her larger crate, she has a paw sticking out the side!
My good friend, Gail, got Riley a get-well-soon card! How thoughtful!
It says: "Hang in there, Riley. It won't be long before you are back chasing balls and squirrels." :)
Riley has to wear her prong collar out in the backyard on the leash now so I can have better control of her. She tried to start running off last night after a rabbit--YIKES! Luckily she was on her prong collar and couldn't take off. Then, that's her not so high tech "sling" under her belly to keep her from slipping and falling and to provide her with extra support.
We want to send a big thank you out to two of our wonderful blogging pals! The first is our friend Miss Barbara! She was having a giveaway for a flappy monkey toy on her blog and we won! But, we have to say thank you big time to our friends, The OP Pack: Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning! They were the original winners of the toy and they said to pass it on to someone else because they had won a lot of things lately and it was passed on to Riley girl! We are thrilled and I know she will be happy to get a new little friend to play with in her crate.

New Digs
3 days of crate rest down, 53 more to go! (Almost 4 days down). Speaking of the crate...I discovered that Riley couldn't exactly stand all the way up in her crate--she's too dang tall!! So I went out and got her the next size up, 42" long x 28" wide x 30" high. She is SO MUCH more comfortable in this crate and is able to stretch out some. In fact, she just tried hiding her chew toy in her bed.
Riley's new digs!
Her leg is looking pretty good. Sorry for the gross picture!
I never did find the water bowl that clipped to the crate, so we just broke down and spent $2.50 to buy a plastic one that we have hooked to one of the side walls now. She's been drinking a good bit of water and has had 2 BM's since she's been home--gross, I know, sorry!
Thanks for all the well-wishes and sooner, rather than later, this will all be in the past and she'll be free to roam the house again!

Two Days Post-Op
2 days of crate rest down, only 54 more to go! (I'm counting Tuesday as a day of crate rest since that was her surgery day). Riley had a good night last night. She had to keep repositioning herself to get more comfortable, but I can't really blame her! I put a cold compress on her incision last night and she didn't really seem to mind that too much. I am also supposed to massage her leg, so have been doing that as well. I also got to stick myself halfway into her crate and snuggle with her for about 10 minutes and get kisses from her! Thank goodness they didn't mess with her sweetness level while she was under the knife!
Scar pictures to follow, so if you don't like seeing staples in skin, skip on down to the bottom!
Scar pictures to follow, so if you don't like seeing staples in skin, skip on down to the bottom!
Still a happy girl even in crate confinement!
Starting after she gets her staples removed (November 1st), I'm supposed to do range of motion "physical therapy" at home with her as much as she'll tolerate. I don't see that being a problem for her, maybe for me because I won't want to hurt her! I'll probably end up being too gentle, but I'll have them show me what I'm supposed to do at the vet when she gets the staples removed.
Her knee is a little swollen, but the main thing that I can tell is swollen is actually her ankle. No worries, that's normal! Anyway, I am sleeping on an air mattress downstairs in the family room by her crate at night in case she needs to go out in the night (plus she'd get lonely otherwise...and so would I!). She had to go out once in the night to do her business and needed to go tank up on water another time (she gets a lot of access to water, I think she just got hot in the night...plus, we have a bowl that clips onto the crate door but I'm still looking around for it at the moment...sigh.).

Riley is Home from Surgery!!
Riley came home at around 11:30 this morning. Her leg looks good from what I've been able to see of it and she isn't too terribly swollen up. She is starting to put a little bit of weight on that leg already (not consistently though)--go Riley!
You can see her in her crate kind of...it's a little dark, but whatever.
She is being so good with keeping calm and quiet in her crate...even though Chloe is looking out of her favorite perch at the front window! I just fed and medicated Riley and I'm expecting her to go back to sleep soon. She was whining for a few seconds earlier but I think she was just bored.
She has a leg full of staples and is sporting a fancy new leg shaving hair do! I'll try to get a good pic of it later.

Riley's TPLO Surgery
I just got off the phone with Riley's surgeon, Dr. Dassler. I talked to him for 10 minutes, so that was kinda nice. Her surgery went well and she did well with the anesthesia and everything. He said the normal angle in a dog's knee is between 28 and 32 degrees. Hers was 37 degrees, so it was pretty steep. That predisposes them to having CCL (Cranial Cruciate Ligament) tears. He also said the angle is also pretty steep in the other knee (her left knee) and that she will most likely have a tear in that knee sometime in the next year or so. Grrrrrrreat. Gives us plenty to look forward to.
Her ligament ended up not being completely torn like they had thought, but was "hanging on for dear life" by about 2 filaments. So practically torn. So they still were able to do the TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotemy) surgery. He said her meniscus (the sort of padding in the knee joint, I think) was not torn, so that's good. He left the ligament and meniscus in and the ligament may go ahead and tear the rest of the way or may not, but the knee is fixed anyway, so it won't be a big deal--she just may limp around for a day or two when it does tear.
He is usually able to correct dog's knees to a 5 degree angle with this surgery and, because of her steep 37 degree angle, was able to correct Riley's to 11 degrees. She should be good to go with the 11 degrees though and he said he's pleased with the result.
Riley is now the bionic doggie and has a stainless steel plate in her leg and 6 shiny new screws into her bone! I imagine she must now look something like this:

She is apparently still all doped up (which is most likely a good thing at this point) from the anesthesia and is on morphine right now. Lucky duck! Anyway, if all goes well, she should be able to come home tomorrow and begin her 8 weeks of crate rest. Dr. Dassler said he has 2.5 pages of instructions for me--woohoo! :)
Thanks for all the puppy and human prayers and crossed paws (and fingers) for Riley! I know she appreciates all of her bloggy pals and I most certainly appreciate all of the support from you all!
